Brandwatch can answer almost any question about what consumers say online. The catch is what it takes to ask. You need a budget sized for an enterprise research team, and often an analyst who knows the query builder well.
This brief looks at the evidence: buyer-reported contract values, published price lists and public reviews. Then it sorts eight alternatives by the job you actually need done, with a plain "why switch, why stay" for each one.
The cost picture
Brandwatch publishes no prices, so every deal starts with a sales call. Vendr's purchase data is the best public benchmark: a $50,000 median across 40 tracked purchases, with contracts from $19,542 to $81,200.
Vendr also reports 15–25% off for multi-year terms. That only helps if you are sure you will stay.

Capabilities at a glance
Four questions decide most shortlists: can you see the price, can you test it on your own data, does everyone on the team get a login, and does it read images and video?
| Tool | Public prices | Free trial | Unlimited users | Image & video | Entry cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brandwatch | ✕ | ✕ | — | — | ~$50,000/yr (Vendr) |
| Scano | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | $417/mo billed annually |
| Talkwalker | ✕ | ✕ | ✓ | ✓ | ~$13,298/yr (Vendr) |
| Pulsar | ✕ | — | — | — | Quote only |
| YouScan | Partial | ✕ | ✓ | Partial | $499/mo, annual only |
| Sprout Social | Partial | Partial | ✕ | — | $199/seat/mo + Listening |
| Meltwater | ✕ | ✕ | — | — | ~$25,800/yr (Vendr) |
| Brand24 | ✓ | ✓ | Partial | — | $199/mo billed annually |
| Determ | ✓ | ✓ | ✓ | — | $249/mo billed yearly |
✓ yes · ✕ no · Partial = some plans only · — = not stated in the sources we checked. Scano's trial workspace follows a short demo. Sprout's trial covers the core plans, and Listening is priced separately.
Why teams leave Brandwatch
Most teams leave over cost and effort, not data quality. Brandwatch scores 8.2 out of 10 on TrustRadius across 160 ratings. The complaints cluster around four findings.
- Price. At a $50,000 median it is the most expensive tool in this brief. Reviewers say it is "not as accessible for smaller businesses."
- No trial. Reviewers point out there is no free trial. You see a demo on the vendor's data, then commit for a year.
- Depth you may not use. Years of history, an advanced query builder and custom dashboards are built for research teams. If you mostly track mentions and send a weekly report, you pay for depth you rarely touch.
- Part of a larger suite. Cision bought Brandwatch in 2021 for a reported $450 million. Some buyers like one vendor for listening, a media database and wire distribution. Others want a focused tool and simpler terms. If you are weighing the parent suite too, see Cision alternatives.
Most bad switches happen when a team buys a light tool for a research job, or a research tool for a monitoring job.
How we compared the tools
We grouped the alternatives by the job Brandwatch does for you, because other vendors sell those jobs separately:
- Consumer research: long history, audience analysis and flexible queries for strategy and insight work.
- Social listening: mentions, sentiment and trends, run day to day by a social or brand team.
- Monitoring on a budget: dependable alerts and simple reports, at a price you can approve without procurement.
Not sure where listening ends and monitoring starts? Read social listening vs media monitoring.
Then we checked three things for each tool:
- Coverage where your audience is. A tool that is excellent in the US and UK can be thin in Türkiye, Central Asia, the Caucasus or the Gulf. Local-language news, messengers such as Telegram and VK, and text inside images all count.
- AI that saves analyst hours. Sentiment in your languages, answers that link to the posts behind them, and spike alerts that explain why volume moved.
- The contract. Minimum term, renewal notice, seat pricing and what happens at the mention cap.
Prices come from vendor pricing pages. Where none is published, we use Vendr's buyer-reported medians. Downsides come from TrustRadius reviews, quoted fairly.
Listening across languages and markets
1. Scano

Scano is an AI media monitoring and social listening platform. It tracks news sites, social networks, messengers, blogs, forums and reviews across 1M+ sources in 20+ languages. It is strongest where English-first tools go thin: Türkiye, Central Asia, the Caucasus and the Gulf. It covers Telegram channels and VK as well as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube.
Features
- Image and video monitoring: OCR reads text in images and video frames. Speech-to-text transcribes what people say in videos and stories, including Telegram video notes. See image and video monitoring.
- AI sentiment with dedicated models for English, Turkish, Arabic, Russian, Kazakh, Persian, Hebrew and French.
- AI Analyst: ask questions about your mentions in plain language and get answers that link to the source posts.
- Daily digest and spike signals: a morning summary, plus alerts when volume or negativity jumps, sent to email and Telegram.
- 13 analytics reports, theme comparison and share of voice, with exports to Excel, Word and PDF and scheduled reports on your template.
- Smart tags that classify mentions automatically.
- Social Space: a unified inbox for comments and messages on your own accounts (included in Business, an add-on below it).
- Unlimited users on every plan, plus iOS and Android apps.
Pricing
Prices are public on scano.me/price. Annual billing saves 15%.
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Themes | Mentions / month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $490 | $417/mo | 5 | 10,000 |
| Professional | $1,290 | $1,097/mo | 15 | 150,000 |
| Business | $2,290 | $1,947/mo | 25 | 500,000 |
| Enterprise | from $3,900 | from $3,315/mo | 40+ | 1,000,000+ |
Starter on annual billing comes to about $5,000 a year, a tenth of Brandwatch's median.
Why switch
- Published prices and unlimited users on every plan
- Mentions inside images, videos and stories, not only typed text
- Dedicated sentiment models for eight languages
- Telegram and VK alongside the big social networks
Why stay (downsides)
- Backfill reaches 6–12 months, not years of history
- No print, TV or radio, no journalist contact database or press release distribution
- Hard mention caps: Starter's 10,000 fill fast for a busy brand
- A smaller review footprint than the big suites
Best for: insights, social and PR teams working across multilingual markets. It suits teams that want image and video mentions included and prefer published prices to a sales-led quote.

Consumer research
These two keep the research depth. Expect quote-based pricing and a sales process.
2. Talkwalker (by Hootsuite)

Talkwalker is the closest like-for-like swap for Brandwatch's research side. Hootsuite announced its acquisition in April 2024, so it now sits alongside a social media management suite.
Features: social listening with AI sentiment and trend detection, image and video recognition, historical data and deeper analytics on higher plans, unlimited users on the Core plan.
Pricing: Core, Analyze and Business plans are all quote-only (pricing page). Vendr reports a median of $13,298 a year, about a quarter of Brandwatch's median. There is no free trial, only a demo.
Why switch
- Research depth close to Brandwatch
- About a quarter of the median contract value
- Fits teams already on Hootsuite
Why stay (downsides)
- TrustRadius reviewers call it "pretty expensive" and "hard to master"
- Reviewers ask for better forum coverage in non-English markets
- Reviewers mention missing real-time LinkedIn and Facebook data
Best for: research and social teams that want Brandwatch-style depth at a lower median price. Read more in Talkwalker alternatives.
3. Pulsar

Pulsar calls itself an audience intelligence platform. Its focus is how different communities talk about the same topic, which suits strategy and insight work. It belongs to Pulsar Group, an AIM-listed company that also runs Isentia, Vuelio and ResponseSource.
Features: audience analysis across communities, Narratives AI for narrative and trend detection, data from social, news, search and first-party sources. Listening (CORE), trends (TRENDS), crisis (Crisis Oracle) and an AI insight agent (CLEAR) are separate tools.
Pricing: Pulsar publishes no prices. Its site offers a demo or a contact form (pulsarplatform.com). We found no Vendr benchmark, so ask for a written quote early.
Why switch
- Built around audiences and narratives, not only brand alerts
- Mixes social, news, search and first-party data
Why stay (downsides)
- No public pricing and no buyer benchmark
- Several products, so scope the quote to avoid unused modules
- Few public reviews: Pulsar CORE has a handful on TrustRadius
Best for: insights and strategy teams that care most about audiences and narratives, not day-to-day alerts.
Social listening for brand teams
These suit a social or brand team that runs listening every day and does not need a research archive.
4. YouScan

YouScan is a social listening platform known for visual analytics, which finds brand logos and scenes in images.
Features: AI aspect-based sentiment and trend detection, Visual Insights for image recognition (top plan only), the Insights Copilot AI assistant, unlimited users.
Pricing: Starter costs $499 a month, billed annually only, for 3 topics, 15,000 mentions a month and 10 Copilot questions a month. The Unlimited plan, with API, Visual Insights and Audience Insights, is quote-only. There is a demo, not a free trial.
Why switch
- Strong visual analytics for image-led brands
- Published entry price and unlimited users
Why stay (downsides)
- Visual and Audience Insights only on the top plan
- Annual billing only, and 3 topics is tight for a brand plus competitors
- 10 Copilot questions a month on Starter
Best for: brand and marketing teams focused on social media and visual brand presence.
5. Sprout Social (with Listening)

Sprout Social is a social media management platform. Its Listening module is a paid add-on, so it suits teams that want publishing, engagement and listening in one place.
Features: Listening with AI insights, Smart Categories and sentiment scoring, Spike Alerts for sudden volume changes, machine-learning filters, plus publishing, an engagement inbox and analytics in the same tool.
Pricing: base plans are priced per seat (pricing page): Standard $199, Professional $299 and Advanced $399 a seat a month billed annually ($249, $399 and $499 billed monthly). Listening is an add-on for Standard and up, priced after a demo. Vendr reports a median Sprout contract of $18,980 a year and warns that Listening "can double or triple total contract value." The core plans come with a 30-day free trial, no card needed.
Why switch
- Listening next to publishing and engagement
- A 30-day self-serve trial on the core plans
Why stay (downsides)
- Per seat pricing: one TrustRadius reviewer says "the cost can add up quickly"
- TrustRadius sums up concerns as "high cost, with frequent add-ons and multi-year contract requirements"
- Listening is not on the public price list
Best for: social teams that already publish in Sprout and want listening in the same tool.
6. Meltwater

Meltwater bundles news, social, broadcast and influencer data in one suite. It replaces Brandwatch if you also need media monitoring and a contact database, though it is not much simpler to buy.
Features: news, social and broadcast monitoring, social listening and analytics, an influencer and journalist database, reporting and dashboards.
Pricing: Meltwater publishes no prices, sets a 12-month minimum term and offers no self-serve trial. Vendr reports a median of $25,800 a year, plus $2,000–$10,000 onboarding and 3–7% renewal increases.
Why switch
- News, broadcast and social under one contract
- Media contacts included
Why stay (downsides)
- TrustRadius reviewers cite lock-in, price and complexity
- Reviewers say it "misses mentions from less mainstream publications"
- Some find the journalist data out of date
Best for: comms teams that want news, social and media contacts in one suite. See Meltwater alternatives.
Monitoring on a budget
Both have published prices and self-serve trials. Neither is built for research depth.
7. Brand24

Brand24 is a self-serve listening tool with a 14-day free trial, no card needed. It is the quickest way to start listening without a sales call.
Features: AI sentiment, mention volume and reach analytics, influencer scoring, spike alerts, unlimited users from the Team plan up.
Pricing (brand24.com/prices)
| Plan | Monthly | Billed annually | Keywords | Mentions / month | Users |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Individual | $249 | $199/mo | 3 | 2,000 | 1 |
| Team | $349 | $299/mo | 7 | 10,000 | Unlimited |
| Pro | $499 | $399/mo | 12 | 40,000 | Unlimited |
| Business | $699 | $599/mo | 25 | 100,000 | Unlimited |
Enterprise starts at $1,499 a month. API access costs an extra $149.
Why switch
- Lowest published entry price in this brief
- Start this week, no contract talks
Why stay (downsides)
- Individual refreshes every 12 hours; real-time updates start on Pro
- TrustRadius reviewers mention missed mentions, slow support and sentiment accuracy
- Lighter on research depth and history
Best for: small teams and solo marketers who want listening without a negotiation. See Brand24 alternatives.
8. Determ

Determ, formerly Mediatoolkit, is a straightforward monitoring tool with unlimited users and keywords on every plan.
Features: real-time monitoring of news and social media, unlimited users and keywords, AI features on every plan, an archive back to 2020.
Pricing (determ.com/pricing): Expand costs $299 a month, or $249 billed yearly, for 5 topics and 5,000 mentions. Command costs $499, or $416 billed yearly, for 10 topics and 10,000 mentions. The trial lasts 5 days, or 14 days after a demo.
Why switch
- Unlimited users and keywords at a low monthly price
- Archive reaches back to 2020
Why stay (downsides)
- 5,000 mentions a month on the entry plan
- Only 3 months of history by default
- Not built for audience or consumer research
Best for: small comms teams that want simple tracking and reports at a low monthly price.
Prices and plans checked October 2026. Vendr figures are buyer-reported medians, not list prices.
Before you switch: your data history
History is the one thing you cannot buy back. A new tool starts collecting from the day you set it up, plus whatever archive backfill its plan includes.
Test on your own data
Nothing free replaces research-grade listening. Google Alerts catches some news mentions, but it has no social coverage, sentiment or reporting.
What you can get is a trial, which Brandwatch does not offer. Sprout Social gives 30 days on its core plans and Brand24 gives 14, both without a card. Determ gives 5 days, or 14 after a demo. Scano sets up a trial workspace on your own brand after a short demo.
Give every tool the same brief:
- Use your real brand and two competitors. Not the vendor's demo data.
- Replay a week you know well. Pick a launch or a crisis and count how many key posts each tool finds.
- Check your languages. Read 20 mentions per language and judge whether the sentiment is right.
- Look inside images and video. Find a branded photo or clip and see whether the tool catches it without a text mention.
- Rebuild your monthly report. Time it, and check whether you could send it without rework.
- Ask for the contract early. Check the minimum term, notice period, seat pricing and what happens at the mention cap.

Conclusion
The right Brandwatch alternative depends on which part of Brandwatch you actually use.
- Deep consumer research with an analyst: Talkwalker for similar depth, or Pulsar for audience and narrative work.
- Social listening run by your social team: YouScan for visual brands, Sprout Social if you already publish there, Meltwater if you also need news and media contacts.
- Monitoring on a budget this week: a Brand24 or Determ trial.
- Listening and monitoring across several languages and markets, including image and video mentions: Scano.
For a sense of the data, browse the monthly Media Pulse reports built from Scano.
Book a Scano demo and we'll set up a trial workspace on your own brand and competitors. Then compare the results with Brandwatch side by side.
